Can You Flush Tofu Cat Litter? What Canadian Cat Owners Should Check

Tofu cat litter may be plant-based and may break down differently from mineral litter, but that does not mean every tofu litter is safe to flush. The answer is product-specific and location-specific.

Check the product label

Look for the manufacturer’s current disposal instructions for the exact SKU. “Plant-based,” “biodegradable” or “dissolvable” is not the same as a universal permission to flush.

Check your municipality

Canadian cities do not all give the same advice. Toronto’s Green Bin guidance accepts certain cat-litter materials, while Peel directs kitty litter to the garbage cart. Other municipalities use a strict pee, poo and paper message and list cat litter as unflushable.

Check your building and plumbing

High-rise buildings may have long shared pipes, and condos may prohibit flushing litter even when a package suggests it. Septic systems and grinder pumps may have additional restrictions.

If every condition allows flushing

Follow the package directions, use only small amounts and never flush bags, mats, wipes or large quantities. If any condition is unclear, use the local disposal method instead.
